You’ve probably had the experience: you learn something new — a formula, a word in another language, a fact for a history test — and then, only a few hours later, it’s gone. The blank space where that memory should be can be frustrating, especially when it happens after you felt confident about understanding it.

This isn’t a personal flaw. It’s simply how human memory works.

 

The Science of Forgetting

Over a century ago, psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus conducted experiments on himself to measure how quickly information fades from memory. What he found became known as the forgetting curve — a steep drop in recall shortly after learning, followed by a slower decline over time.

The curve shows that most forgetting happens soon after we first encounter something. If we don’t revisit it, the brain treats it as unimportant and makes room for other information.

 

Why It Happens:

  • Lack of connections – Information is harder to remember if it’s not linked to something we already know.
  • Low retrieval – If we never try to recall the information, the memory trace weakens.
  • Cognitive overload – Learning too much at once can crowd out what was just learned.

 

How to Make Learning Stick:

  • Space it out – Revisit information over several days (spaced repetition).
  • Test yourself – Try recalling without looking at notes (testing effect).
  • Connect it – Link facts to real-life examples or prior knowledge.
  • Sleep on it – Sleep consolidates memories.
